A Composer Between Two Worlds

Ilan Chouraki is a Franco-Israeli composer, arranger, and producer. Trained at IRCAM under Pierre Boulez, he has built a multifaceted career spanning film music, television, and stage — without ever stopping composing for himself, driven by inner necessity rather than commission.

What defines his chamber music is a claimed freedom: the freedom to blend classical heritage with jazz, postmodern irony, and a gift for narrative. His works are often described as paintings in sound — pieces that tell a story, sketch a character, inhabit a place. You enter them the way you enter a novel.

Based in Jerusalem since 2002, Chouraki collaborates regularly with leading ensembles and soloists across Europe, Russia, and the United States, notably through the international collective Three Essential Elements (ThrEE) — a worldwide network dedicated to the renewal of contemporary chamber music.

Works

George in Paris Piano, violin, cello & flute — 4 movements · 8’13”
2024

A tribute to Gershwin — not through imitation, but through spiritual kinship. Chouraki imagines the American composer’s wanderings through 1920s Paris, his encounters, his freedom. The first movement is deeply rooted in the blues of Porgy and Bess; the others open up, take flight, hesitate. Four movements — Andante · Allegro · Adagio · Presto — carrying in their very form something of the genius they celebrate.

Beyond Forgiveness Piano trio — 4 movements
2022

Four movements built around the theme of forgiveness: The Others — the detached gaze of those untouched by suffering; Solitude — the victim’s inner revolt; a third movement drawn from Spanish musical traditions, a metaphorical bullfight in which the bull embodies the resilience of the Jewish people; and The March of the Living, a hymn to survival and hope. A work both deeply personal and universal, rich with musical cross-references and emotional rigor.

Fading of Pleasures String quartet — World premiere: Umbria Ensemble, Spello, Italy · Sept. 2024
2024

The piece traces the arc of joy as it moves through us and recedes. From its restless Allegro opening — driven by pizzicato impulses and sudden sul ponticello timbres — through cascading fortissimo climaxes to fragile, harmonics-laced silences, the four voices circle, interrupt and echo one another, chasing a sensation the others have already released. The final pages, where all four instruments converge in a long trembling unison before dissolving into silence, feel less like an ending than a return — to stillness, to the soil from which the next moment of wonder will quietly grow.

L’Histoire du Prince Charmant Fantasy for solo flute
2022

A retelling of the fairy tale for solo flute. The prince is there, the sleeping beauty too — but Chouraki weaves in contemporary irresolution and quiet humor, leaving the performer to decide how the story ends. Written for Rita D’Arcangelo — an international prizewinner trained under Sir James Galway, Carnegie Hall soloist, and former principal flute of the Osaka Philharmonic Orchestra — and recorded on Inspired by Rita D’Arcangelo 2.

Les Trois Parisiennes Clarinet quartet (E♭, B♭, A & Bass B♭)

Three women at a Parisian café terrace. Each movement is a portrait: one elegant and refined, another sharp and irreverent, the third — to be discovered. Light on the surface, genuinely subtle in the writing.

Une Promenade au Jardin des Plantes B♭ clarinet & string quartet

A musical meditation on the beauty of the natural world. The historic Parisian botanical garden as a setting for a gentle, contemplative soundscape — the clarinet weaving its melodic line through the strings like a visitor strolling through flowering paths.

Liberté · Mon Enfant · Je Veux Être un Homme Three melodies for soprano & piano — texts by Eden Chouraki

In the tradition of Francis Poulenc — rich harmonies, clear tonality, the piano a full partner rather than mere accompaniment. Three women, three solitudes, three forms of resistance. Yuval Oren, soprano · Anna Kavalerova, piano.

Mon Enfant

Je Veux Être un Homme

It Is Not a Tear Solo piano

Written at the request of maestro Massimiliano Valenti during his visit to Israel. A jazz-inflected classical ballad, intimate and virtuosic — a declaration of love not quite ready to speak its name.

Beyond Forgiveness — Symphonic Version

Symphony orchestra & solo piano

An orchestral reworking of the original piano trio, cast as a full concerto for solo piano and symphony orchestra. The orchestral writing amplifies the emotional weight of the original — the bullfight of the third movement, The March of the Living — giving them a collective resonance the trio could only suggest.

In Progress

Le Concerto Légende

Symphony orchestra · Mixed choir · Solo piano · Lyric baritone

The most ambitious work in Chouraki’s catalogue. Borrowing from the theatrical concerto grosso form, it tells a story everyone knows — but has never heard quite like this.

Little Red Riding Hood becomes a metaphor for narcissistic perversion: the Wolf is not a beast, but a manipulator. The libretto, by Eden Chouraki, unfolds this psychological drama with the chorus serving as collective narrator, while the baritone — the Wolf’s voice, the seducer’s voice — engages in dialogue with the solo piano, embodying Little Red Riding Hood. Two movements are complete; the third is underway.
