The grand Pas de deux, for violin, cello and piano
The great Andante maestoso of the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Prince is the emotional summit of Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker: a simple descending scale that builds, over harps and full orchestra, into one of the most overwhelming climaxes in ballet. This arrangement brings the full sweep of that music to a piano trio, without cutting a single bar.
What you receive
- Score: piano part with the violin and cello lines in small notes above
- Violin part
- Cello part
Three print-ready PDF files, each supplied in both A4 and US Letter formats, all included in the same download. Every page prints on a single sheet. In the string parts, every page turn falls in a rest. The score is laid out in pairs of pages; a page turner is recommended for the pianist.
A faithful reduction
This edition follows Tchaikovsky’s full score bar by bar (Moscow, Muzyka, 1974): 74 bars, nothing omitted.
- The violin takes the first violins and the wind melodies (flutes, oboes, trumpets).
- The cello takes the cellos, the bass clarinet solo and the brass lines.
- The piano carries the two harps, the woodwind and horn harmony, the timpani and the double basses.
Tempo and metronome marks (♩ = 69, then poco più mosso ♩ = 76) and string bowings are Tchaikovsky’s own. Lines taken from wind instruments keep their original phrasing, adapted to the bow.

Performance notes
- Violin: pizzicato in bars 1–13, as in the orchestra; arco from bar 14.
- Piano: the arpeggiated chords in bars 1–11 reproduce the second harp; the sextuplets are the first harp.
- Pedal: none marked, as in Tchaikovsky’s score; at the pianist’s discretion.
